Liberal Arts and Service-Learning Syllabi Designed in the Philippines

Faculty and staff of the century-old College of Liberal Arts at De La Salle University (DLSU) in Manila participated in a syllabus orientation and write-shop focused on integrating service-learning activities into their academic programmes.

The workshop, organized by the DLSU Service-Learning Program team, was attended by faculty and syllabus developers from various academic departments. The College of Liberal Arts offers a wide range of undergraduate degree programmes, including Behavioural Sciences, Asian Studies, Creative Writing, Communication Arts, Religious Education, Translation and Interpreting, International Studies, Fine Arts, Philosophy, Literature, Political Science, History, Psychology, English, and Economics.

In their presentations, the specialists discussed the intrinsic connection between service-learning and the Lasallian mission alongside the reflection component in these practices. Participants created customized syllabi for their disciplines’ unique pedagogical needs and community engagement opportunities.

The result was a collection of syllabi infused with service-learning, promoting academic intended learning outcomes and civic responsibility among students in the College of Liberal Arts. It was an event with a holistic approach to education for the community upliftment in line with the Lasallian tradition.
